Mastering Portrait Photography Through Rembrandt, Two-Point, and Three-Point Lighting Techniques

In my Portrait Photography class, students develop practical skills in professional studio lighting, beginning with Rembrandt lighting to understand how light direction creates the characteristic triangular highlight on the shadow side of the face. Students then practice two-point and three-point lighting techniques, learning to position key, fill, and backlights to control facial shadows, contrast, depth, and subject separation from the background. Through hands-on assignments, students learn to operate external flash units, adjust flash power, use light modifiers, and coordinate aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to achieve proper exposure. By the end of the project, students are expected to independently set up and photograph portraits using Rembrandt, two-point, and three-point lighting, demonstrate control over lighting ratios and shadow quality, and produce a series of technically accurate and creatively composed portraits that showcase different lighting styles and moods.
