My Story
I began my journey into 3D animation at a time when resources were scarce. Without access to the internet or specialized books, I relied on the help documentation within 3D Max to teach myself the intricacies of the software. This experience laid the foundation for my passion and commitment to mastering animation. When I later pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Graphic Communication, I was able to enhance my self-taught skills by taking university courses in animation and illustration. These courses deepened my understanding of both 2D and 3D animation, allowing me to develop a more well-rounded expertise.
My professional journey in the animation industry began in 2008 when I took on the roles of Director and 3D Generalist for the AMU CHARCHI series. This project consisted of 13 episodes, each 7 minutes long, totaling 91 minutes of animation. This marked my first significant foray into the industry and allowed me to apply the skills I had developed through years of self-study and formal education.
From 2010 to 2017, I worked as both a Director and 3D Generalist at NAGHSHE KHEYAL Company, where I led a talented animation team to produce the BESHNO AZ NEY series. This series, composed of 13 episodes of 11 minutes each, was developed over a three-year period from 2010 to 2013. During this time, I honed my skills in storytelling, animation production, and team leadership, establishing myself as a key figure in the Iranian animation industry.
In 2013, I joined the KHODADAD animation series as Director and 3D Generalist, where I played a crucial role in the pre-production phase of the project. Pre-production is an essential step in animation, involving storyboarding, conceptual art, and planning that ultimately guide the entire production process. My work in this phase further solidified my understanding of the creative and technical demands of animation.
Driven by my desire to elevate the status of animation artists in Iran, I founded Emma Animation Magazine in 2015. As Manager, Art Director, and Graphic Designer, I oversaw the publication of nine issues, each spotlighting the work of animation artists across the country. This venture allowed me to contribute to the animation community in a new way, giving artists a platform to showcase their talents and share their insights with a broader audience.
In 2017, I became Art Director at NOVIN KELK Company, where I expanded my repertoire by designing websites and brand identities for companies such as IRIC Tech. I also worked on 3D mapping motion graphics and created 3D animations for projects like Lomenz Restaurant. This role allowed me to blend my artistic skills with my technical expertise, further broadening my scope of work within the animation and design industries.
From 2017 to 2018, I took on various projects as a 2D/3D Animation Generalist and Animator, including work on Zaryan and Behseema animations, the ZARYAD 2D series, and the Artman Baby project. Additionally, I worked on several 3D mapping projects, contributing to a diverse range of creative endeavors that allowed me to continuously expand my skills.
In 2018, I received a promotion to 3D Animation Post-Production and Production Lead. In this role, I led production services for animation companies in India and Oman, further establishing my international reputation as a skilled animation professional. During this period, I worked as a 3D Generalist, Lighting and Rendering Artist, and Animation Lead for projects such as the Dr. ZOOP animation series and the Oman King Anniversary project.
Throughout my industrial career, I have always sought to stay on the cutting edge of animation technology. By continually reading and researching new techniques, I have been able to enhance my skills and remain a relevant figure in the animation industry. Alongside my professional work, I also served as a freelance animation consultant and Research and Development specialist, offering guidance to animation teams and helping to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field.
In 2019, I made the pivotal decision to pursue further education by enrolling in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Digital Production Arts at Clemson University. Studying in the United States had long been a dream of mine, and this program provided the opportunity to deepen my expertise in animation while immersing myself in the world of academic research and practice. During my time at Clemson, my extensive industry experience led to an offer to teach a course in 3D animation within the Digital Production Arts (DPA) program. This experience ignited a passion for teaching that I had not previously realized. I found immense satisfaction in sharing my knowledge with junior students who shared my love for animation, and it was during this time that I realized how much I enjoyed dedicating myself to education.
While at Clemson, I also contributed as a Lighting and Rendering Artist to two short 3D animated films, Papel and Knight Time Story. These projects allowed me to apply my technical skills in a collaborative academic setting and further refine my expertise in the animation pipeline.
After completing my MFA, I knew that I wanted to continue in academia, where I could combine my passion for animation with my newfound love for teaching. I chose to join Claflin University, a prestigious Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in South Carolina. Claflin University has a long history of academic excellence and is consistently ranked among the top HBCUs in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. Teaching at Claflin allows me to not only share my knowledge and experience with students but also to contribute to the university’s mission of providing a high-quality education to a diverse student body.
In reflecting on my journey, I am proud of the path I have taken and the experiences I have gained along the way. From teaching myself 3D animation with limited resources to leading animation teams, launching a magazine, pursuing advanced education, and now teaching at a renowned university, I have always remained passionate about animation and committed to continuous growth in my field. My goal is to inspire the next generation of animators while continuing to evolve as both an artist and an educator.
